Festival Strategy
Home |
The festival strategy is to apply to as many as possible and to screen whenever possible. We have a preference for international festivals because we, as a US industry (indies), are a bit reluctant to screen out of the US – but this is a global industry, so we wish to be well known in many markets. SLZ is too long for most festivals to screen; because when they say 30 min’s or less they really mean 12 or less. Furthermore, it is my personal opinion that SLZ destroys the illusion of independent filmmaking that this industry tries so hard to espouse. This belief that all you need is an XL-1 and passion…and it can happen. Which very well may be true, but that is not going to become a career. SLZ competes on a professional level and hence we are often accused of not embodying the “spirit” of indie filmmaking... well if the spirit is a short career with few opportunities to have full creative control... then so be it. SLZ is a demonstration of filmmaking. We do not apologize for our budget or our attitude. The feature was written in ’99, so if you think the short looked nice... you ain’t seen nothin’ yet. We are aggressive in California, because that is where we live. A screening in CA is a guarantee that the picture car will be in attendance. Our strategy is simply interesting and exotic festivals. This is not a film for programmers, it is a film for Generation X. They are our judges. |
